How do you know if one version is better than the other one?

 

For example if you use a simple moving average, how do you know if the one for 20 candles is better than the one for 30 candles?

 

One of the advantages of algorithmic trading is that a computer needs strict rules.

 

Humans probably would say something like “Ohh, I see it on the chart”.

 

Computers can’t do that, they need to decide based on numbers.

 

So it is necessary to define exactly what you want to do.

 

Once that is done, you can test it to get a result.

 

It is not so important if the result is good or bad.

 

It is more important that you can repeat what you do and produce consistent results.

 

Reproducible and measurable results are the basis to really prove or disprove that something works.

 

For example in that old Roger Bannister story it was possible to prove that a human can run a mile in under 5 minutes.

 

Afterwards it was no longer a question if it could be done.

 

Afterwards the new question was how to improve those results even more.

 

And that is also how it is been done in automated trading.

 

It is always about measurable improvement, not about what somebody sees on a chart.
